Silvering, Resilvering, and How to Make A Two Way Mirror

The process of creating a mirror can be rather easy depending upon the type of mirror you want to create and the method you choose for making the mirror. If you search online on how to make a mirror or do silvering and resilvering, you will find a host of different processes all of which lead to the end result which is the creation of the mirror. You can create a mirror from scratch or you can repair an existing mirror with resilvering to save money on buying a new mirror. Here are some useful tips which are used to silver, resilver, and make two way mirrors.

silvering The Process of Silvering

To prepare for the process of silvering you must place the glass on a flat surface and clean the glass thoroughly so it is completely free of any dust or debris. Leaving particles of dirt on the surface of the glass will affect the process when you silver the glass.

When you silver a mirror, it requires a preparation process of two different solutions which are used to create the mirror. One solution contains a blend of pure nitrate of silver, distilled water, and ammonia with a specific percentage for each ingredient. The other solution contains a combination of Rochelle salts, distilled water and pure nitrate of silver with a certain percentage for each ingredient. When the solutions are prepared, you can begin to prepare the glass for the silvering process.

Place the glass on a level surface and make sure the room is clean and free of debris that could make its way onto the surface of the glass. Create a border around the glass to prevent the solution from escaping. The room where you are working should be anywhere from 85 to 100 degrees plus warm distilled water is used to bring the glass up to the proper temperature which is 90 to 100 degrees.

The warm distilled water is poured onto the glass to ensure that it is level. Use some wood wedges during the leveling process. When the glass is level the distilled water will cover the entire surface. You then slope the glass slightly to clear off the distilled water so you can pour the solution for silvering. Once you clear off the distilled water place the glass back in the exact same location.

Once everything is set, an equal percentage of each solution is mixed in a container and then poured onto the glass surface. Leave the solution on the glass surface for at least one half hour before picking up the glass and allowing the solution to run off. You then set the mirror upright to allow it to dry and then prepare for another layer of solution if necessary.

The Process of Resilvering

You can restore a mirror that has gotten damaged or is simply worn through the process of resilvering. You will find that there are many methods which are used to resilver a mirror. There are tips and tricks and then there are other processes which can be accomplished with a resilvering kit which you can find at your local home improvement center.

If you have a mirror that has been damaged a quick fix can be accomplished with tin foil and quicksilver which is a metallic element used to create the reflective quality of a mirror. Simply pour the quicksilver onto the tin foil and rub it in with a soft cloth. Continue the process of rubbing until it converts to a bright polished finish. Position the mirror face down and place the tinfoil with quicksilver over the damaged area. Finish it by placing a piece of paper and then a weight on top of the foil. Let it set for several hours before you remove the weight to ensure the tin foil adheres to the glass.

How to Make a Two Way Mirror

You can create a two way mirror to serve a wide array of purposes some of which include home security, monitoring for shoplifters if you run a retail establishment, and many other purposes. Two way mirrors are famous in police headquarters for interrogation purposes.

Although two way mirrors seem complicated when it comes to construction, they are actually very easy and cost effective to create. All you need is a piece of glass and the reflective film which you can purchase by the roll. When you create a two way mirror the process is similar to blocking the sun from the windows of your auto.

To create the two way mirror clean the glass with any type of glass cleaner and allow it to dry. Measure the glass and then cut a piece of the reflective film from the roll to fit the size of the glass. Be careful when you are handling the reflective film so it does not get creased or damaged. Place the reflective film over the glass and gradually smooth it out with a rubber tool to create a quality reflective surface.

You can use the two way mirror for any purpose and it is an inexpensive solution to providing home security or any other location where a two way mirror is useful
